Grade 6 Recollection

The Grade 6 students had their yearly recollection last August 14, 2015 at the Marian Missionary of the Holy Cross in Silay City. The recollection was facilitated by Brother Froilan Maria de Atras and Brother Lawrence Sigues.

The day started with a short film viewing and a drawing activity showing good and bad days with one's family. This activity helped them be aware on how to stay together as a family whatever situations are faced everyday.

Fr. Benedict Maria Cruz administered the Sacrament of Confession, with the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist culminating the day.

The 6th Catholic Education Association of the Philippines (CEAP) Youth Congress was held last August 1 and 2 at the University of San Agustin in Iloilo City.  And the six of us, namely Marlyn Bernasol and Micah Ramirez from Grade 10 and Eleazar Sayon, Louis Spenzer Umali, Steve Louise Rotelo and myself from Grade 9, were sent to be the representatives of St. Francis of Assisi School of Silay City among the 2,021 total delegates of the Youth Congress.

The Youth Congress’ theme is “Catholic Schools in the Year of the Poor” which promotes a positive attitude of students towards poverty.  The program included a talk about Poverty which was relayed by Mr. Richard Pazcoguin and Monsignor Meliton Oso, Director of Jaro Archdiocesan Social Action Center.  They tackled on what the Bible says about poverty, the issues of poverty, hunger and unemployment and the challenges to the youth of today.  Then a Eucharistic Celebration was presided by Monsignor Ely Rafael Fuentes and Rev. Fr.  Jose Gualberto Villasis gave the homily.

At the end of the program there were dance animation, youth jam which played praise and worship songs and a talent show which was participated by several schools.  We learned many things about being poor in spirit and how to serve the poor.

The Book Lover's Club "Storytelling Activity"

The Book Lover's Club had a storytelling activity at the school library last July 18.  The club is headed by the librarian, Ms. May Santillan, and is composed of 20 members from grade 4 to grade 10. We started the storytelling activity by reading three series from “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” books.

After that we read “I Went to the Zoo,” a biblical story, and we had a bible sharing.  We ended the club meeting with snacks.

I’m looking forward for another Book Lover's Club meeting wherein our mind is fed with knowledge and our imagination widens from the books that we read.

Bible Quiz 2015

For the first time, St. Francis School of Assisi of Silay City participated in the 6th Society of St. Paul's National Bible Quiz 2015 last July 18 held at The President's Hall of the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos, Bacolod City.

Representing SFAS were the Grade 9 students namely, Steve Louise Rotelo, Eleazar Sayon and myself.  There were 23 Catholic schools in Negros Occidental that joined in Western Visayas Elimination Round.  Unfortunately, we were not able to make it to the Semi-Finals.  However, we still feel blessed with the experience.  "In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in you." (1 Thessalonian 5:18).
